Join us for one of our Fall community classes. This year we have several programs available, many of which are pay-what-you-can. See the full calendar below.
Have questions about our classes? Check out our FAQS below.
Farm to Table
Join us in our gardens and kitchen to learn how to use different foods to create delicious meals, snacks, and desserts! This class is designed for adults ages 18+ who want to learn how to grow food sustainably by working “with” nature. We will be drying herbs, canning, pickling, blending teas from the tea garden, and teaching how to use fresh, local produce in easy, healthy dishes. Each week we will send participants home with fresh food from the agrihood and recipes to cook with the family.
This class will run on Fridays from 1-3 pm for six weeks. Dates are September 18, 25, October 2, 9, 16, and 23.
The cost for us to run this course is about $150 per participant, but we offer a pay-what-you-can option. Limited to 25 participants, so register early!
Dementia Care and Horticulture Therapy
This program is designed for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Come join us in the garden for a time of fun, care, and tending. This class will be co-led by the Executive Director of Rooted, Konnie Vissers and Megan Versteeg (R/RTO), a Recreation Therapist who specializes in dementia care.
This program will run on Fridays from 9-11 am for six weeks. Dates are September 18, 25, October 2, 9, 16, and 23.
The cost to run this program is about $20 per participant (caregivers are free). We offer a pay-what-you-can sliding scale.
Young Adults, Mental Health, and the Environment
This course will focus on how our environment affects mental health. Covering topics including: the climate crisis, eco-anxiety, coping with emotions, and caring for the environment, together we will learn from an environmental sustainability expert as well as an expert in mental health and eco-anxiety. This class is geared toward college, university, and young adults.
This class will run for four weeks on Monday evenings from 6-8 pm. Dates are September 21, 28, October 5, and 19 (there will not be class on Thanksgiving weekend).
This class is pay-what-you-can, with a recommendation of $10 per week. There is limited enrollment, so you must register to join.
Coming January 2027: Theology and the Care of Creation
Join us for an online course for those interested in eco-theology and care for the planet. This will allow participants to get a taste of what we do at Rooted, as well as explore topics including biblical ecology, the history of Earth care in the church, eco-anxiety and climate trauma in the church, and why congregations should demonstrate care for the Earth. This course will be geared toward pastors, leaders, and those interested in continuing education on eco-theology.
Classtime and cost TBD, dependent on funding.
Coming Spring 2027: Parent and Tot Gardening Class
This weekday course will be open to parents and their tots ages 0-4. We will have music, stories, and fun in the garden. Together we will take short hikes, explore the gardens in the Agrihood, and learn how to care for plants and the planet.
Registration is limited to 20 tots, so stay tuned for more information coming in December.
Costs TBD.
FAQS
1. Do I have to go to Kortright Church to attend Rooted programs? (or any church for that matter)?
Absolutely Not! All of our programming is open to the community. Most of our community programs are non-religious. Any Christian programming will explicitly say so in the description. For example, our church cohort program is explicitly for pastors, and our Summer Camps are Christian camps.
2. Will I get my clothes dirty in the garden?
Yes, probably! We won’t be doing a ton of heavy lifting in our community programs, but you still may want to wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
3. What should I bring?
Please bring a water bottle and sun screen. Most of our programming is outdoors. For the kids, youth, and young adult programs, please wear shoes you can comfortably walk in.
5. What are Rooted’s safety policies?
All of the staff for Rooted are police checked, and we have a special training protocol called “Leading with Care” that teaches all of our leaders high ethical standards for working with children and vulnerable adults. To view our full policies, please click HERE.
6. Is Kortright a nut-free facility?
Kortright Church is a peanut-free facility. However we do grow hazelnut trees in the agrihood.
