Phase One Planting

Thank you for helping us plant phase one of the agrihood on Mother’s Day Weekend!

On Saturday, May 9, 2026 we gathered together with about 75 people from the community to plant 100 fruit and nut trees and bushes. The majority of these are planted in an orchard on the back of the Kortright property, adjacent to the food security garden. We also planted nine Paw-Paw trees in the front of the property that are part of edible guilds being companion planted with Maples, Oaks, and Pine trees. In the orchard we have hazelnuts, plums, cherries, apples, pears, persimmons, seabuckthorn, haskaps, saskatoon berries, raspberries, and blackberries. We prioritize native species and all of the plants are species that grow in our zone. A big thank you to Whiffletree Nursery for providing trees at an affordable cost and for donating all of the mulch for the orchard and to Van Beek’s Landscaping for donating the mushroom compost!
